The city of Biloxi currently ranks 5th in the state of Mississippi in terms of total population, though before Hurricane Katrina the city was ranked 3rd in total population. Hurricane Katrina ravaged Biloxi, with no less than 90% of the buildings on the coast in Biloxi and neighboring Gulfport had been completely destroyed by the hurricane. The city has benefited greatly from the construction of Interstate 10 right along the northern border of Biloxi. This has led to a huge rise in tourism, as the city is now accessible via the interstate highway system.
