Car Shipping Services to Dubuque, IA

Dubuque 1Dubuque is a city in and is also the county seat of Dubuque County, Iowa, and is currently the tenth-largest city in the state by total population, which sits at over 58,200 residents. Dubuque sits in what is known locally as the Tri-State Area, as Dubuque sits along the eastern border of Iowa and abuts both Illinois and Wisconsin. Dubuque has been settled since the middle of the 18th century, but did not see any real growth until the middle of the 19th century, well after the Louisiana Purchase (and, with it, modern-day Iowa) became a part of the United States. Dubuque grew into a regional manufacturing and agricultural center that lasted well until the 1980’s; unfortunately, at that time the “Farm Crisis” hit, which put a damper on Dubuque’s economic output. City leaders, eager to outpace the deindustrialization that gripped Dubuque at the time, rapidly pushed for economic diversification and today Dubuque is a thriving city as a result.

Dubuque is located in Iowa, which – and let’s be honest here – it not a popular auto transport area. It’s not Iowa’s fault; it’s more the fact that there are few true major metropolitan areas in Iowa, much of the state’s expansion was thanks to agriculture, which requires vast fields as opposed to truncated downtown areas, and its agricultural-based economy led to fewer settlers moving to Iowa, and Dubuque. This is a bit part of why the city has remained as small as it has, and though it is growing today it is still far behind the other major cities in the region. It also doesn’t help that literally no interstates, major or minor, service Dubuque or any of the surrounding areas – the closest interstate is I-39, east in Rockford, which is over a hundred miles away and not all that fun of a drive for a carrier.

This lack of major interstates has hurt car shipping services to and from Dubuque, since auto transport drivers don’t want to make the trek along roads that pass through the middle of nowhere for only one or two customers. Couple this with the fact that there are few customers actually searching for auto transport services to or from Dubuque, and you have a recipe for higher prices and longer pickup and delivery windows. Unlike other cities that are out in the middle of nowhere, Dubuque doesn’t even sit near any major metropolitan areas; it’s a ways away from Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Rockford, Illinois, two of the more popular areas in the region, but unless you’re willing to move your pickup or delivery location literally hundreds of miles away from Dubuque, you’re going to be stuck paying higher prices if you want your vehicle picked up in a decent amount of time.

That’s the problem with the car shipping industry – the people who provide those services stay where the customers are and provide shipping along the most common routes as dictated by customer demand. With so little demand for services into and out of Iowa, including Dubuque, customers are at the mercy of the prices that auto transporters set, and have little leeway in terms of finding a different company. The weather doesn’t help, either; in addition to being isolated in eastern Iowa, Dubuque experiences relatively snowy winters, which can cause even more delays since winter brings conditions that are not conducive to a safe auto transport experience.
