Cranston is a city located in Providence County, Rhode Island and is currently the third-largest city in the state by population, home to over 80,000 total residents. Today part of the Providence Metropolitan Statistical Area, Cranston was first established in 1638 when the Pawtuxet Purchase was finalized. With European settlers getting huge swaths of land from the local Native Americans, settlement started quickly, and by the mid-18th century Cranston had grown enough to be incorporated as a town. Once much larger than it is today, over the years other, larger cities, particularly Providence, have annexed areas of the town, and by the 1910’s Cranston residents had had enough, and decided to incorporate as a city.
