Auto Shipping Services to Davenport, IA

Davenport 1Davenport is a city in and the county seat of Scott County, Iowa; according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2011 estimate the population of Davenport just eclipsed 100,000 – it is currently the third-largest city in the state of Iowa and anchors a metropolitan area of 382,000 residents. The city was founded in 1836 and was named for George Davenport, a colonel in the Black Hawk War.

Davenport is located roughly halfway between Chicago and Des Moines, and Davenport grew mainly thanks to the traffic along the Mississippi River. The city, historically, has been a major trading area, and unfortunately – due to its location on the Mississippi – it is prone to flooding. However, many civil engineering improvements over the years have minimized flood damage to many buildings along the waterfront. You can read more about Davenport here.

Transporting a vehicle to or from Davenport isn’t the easiest thing in the world due to its rather isolated location in eastern Iowa, but at the same time it’s not impossible because there are several fairly busy interstates that run through it, particularly I-80, a major east-west interstate that passes through much of the Midwest. I-80 is not the most popular interstate highway for auto transporters, as it runs through some pretty rural and isolated areas, but it’s not like they never go on it at all.

I-74 also services Davenport, which is fantastic because it services Indianapolis in nearby Indiana, and Indianapolis is one of the largest transportation hubs in the entire country. The fact it’s located about 300 miles away – about a day’s drive for an auto transporter – makes it even better. Davenport may be isolated, but it’s relatively easy to get to in an area where there are major cities only hours away, and that bodes well in the auto transport industry.

Davenport sits right in the middle of Tornado Alley, yet ironically has never seen a devastating tornado touch down in the city. It does, however, see frequent flooding – this stems from being built right along the shore of the Mississippi River and not having a flood wall. This makes it prone to flooding, as the Mississippi River is rather unpredictable, and often overflows its banks – this is a common occurrence along the entire river, but Davenport especially suffers from it because of its lack of flood wall, and the fact that there is real estate right along the banks of the river.
