Ford Offering CNG and Propane Fueled F-150 Trucks
New developments in Ford’s R&D apparently have yielded some cool results: for the first time, a company will be offering two different types of alternatively-powered half-ton pickup trucks.
The F-150 is a staple of Ford’s pickup truck lines, but more to the point the fact that Ford is committing to both propane and compressed natural gas (CNG), which are two fuels that have not been in the media nearly as much as electric power and hydrogen, among others.
But propane and compressed natural gas provide much more power than electricity or hydrogen fuel cells (at least at this point), which makes it an ideal candidate for larger vehicles.
Auto transporters have their eyes on new developments in alternative fuel sources, as diesel prices are getting more and more expensive and, despite efforts to cut down on their carbon footprint, do put out a lot of emissions.
Something like a CNG-powered auto transport truck could go a long way to revolutionizing the car shipping industry – while trucks would still be expensive, larger companies that own fleets of transport trucks could invest in alternatively-fueled trucks and cut down on their fuel budget, which would in turn cause prices to drop on almost every route across the country.
This is still a few years away, of course, if it ever gets implemented at all – the biggest problem right now is finding a company to invest in the idea of powering their trucks with something other than diesel. It’s expensive to buy new trucks, and it also doesn’t help that there would not be many places to refuel; with diesel, trucks have plenty of access to fuel across the country.
