Nissan is looking at developing their autonomous drive feature, which would allow for full control of an automobile by a computer throughout the entire trip. Now, Nissan is looking at launching it by 2020 – that’s a full seven years away (six, if we’re going by model years), so there’s time to perfect the technology. But the question still remains: is it going to be safe?
The idea of a car that drives itself is about as old as the car itself. It would allow for a lot of things – a car doesn’t necessarily have to be something that people have to use only to get places. New opportunities in a variety of different things could stem from the fact that the driver of a car no longer is confined to actually driving, but technology can only go so far. How well will this system prevent accidents? Will there be some type of manual override? Will it be a freeway-only type thing, similar to how cruise control works? Regardless, chances are logistics drivers – including auto transporters – won’t be seeing this anytime soon. There’s just too much involved in driving a huge truck, too many variables that even a computer wouldn’t be able to handle, or so common knowledge would believe. It could save a lot of money in terms of transportation, what with not having to pay a driver, but again that’s only for a fully autonomous system that does not need a driver, and that could very be longer away. We really would need more details before seeing just how big an impact this could have, but as it stands now, transporters don’t even use automated backup systems in their trucks. That’s gotta say something.
