California to Strengthen Infrastructure, Support Alternative Energies
The state of California has long been known as a progressive state. From medical marijuana to alternative energy, Californians seem always on the forefront of paradigm-shifting trends, and the word is that the state is looking to extend rebates on electric vehicles as well as pledge $2 million for up to 100 new hydrogen refueling stations across the state. This comes at a time when the state’s greenhouse gas emissions are slow to be put in check, though the state’s zero emission vehicle program is helping cut down on their carbon footprint. California has awarded close to $25 million in rebates for over 8,500 electric vehicles sold – and those numbers are only through the end of 2012!
The alternative energy new ticker is an important one for auto transporters because the cost of fuel is so high. In today’s world, auto transport carriers are having to charge more and more each year in order to run the same routes, which ends up hurting their business and putting an undue strain on customers. Fuel is almost always a carrier’s number one overhead cost and can cut into their budget something fierce; some carriers barely make enough to keep their trucks fueled, let alone turn a profit. This is the impact $4/gallon diesel fuel is having on our industry, and every little piece of alternative energy support is fantastic. With California pledging the construction of 100 new hydrogen fueling stations, it does give more support to hydrogen powered vehicles, which could be a potential upgrade for auto transport carriers, provided it can offer the same amount of power that diesel currently does. Having to ship fewer cars because hydrogen alone isn’t enough to power their truck at 60 miles per hour over extended periods of time with ten cars on the back won’t be very conducive to saving money, after all.
