Norfolk is an independent city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Home to a population of over 242,800 residents, Norfolk is the second-largest city in Virginia, behind Virginia Beach, which sits only 20 miles or so east of Norfolk. It also sits close to Newport News, Chesapeake and Portsmouth. It is a part of the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News Metropolitan Statistical Area, home to over 1.7 million residents, making it the largest metropolitan area in the state. Much of Norfolk’s growth and economic strength lie in the Norfolk Naval Base, which is located in the northwestern part of the city.
As mentioned, Norfolk is a part of the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News metro area, also known as the Hampton Roads area. As the largest metro area in the state of Virginia, the whole place is a pretty popular car transport location, and the number of people in the area makes it a more popular location amongst the myriad auto transport carriers that are on the road today. The main route through Norfolk is I-64, which originates in the eastern areas of Norfolk and runs north-northwest up to Richmond, Virginia and further on into West Virginia. A fair distance sits between I-95 and I-64, but carriers can easily take a day or two to service the Virginia Beach-Norfolk area and then continue on into Richmond and get back on I-95.
