During the American Civil War the city served as a major prisoner of war camp, though it wasn’t nearly as bad as Andersonville Prison, located in Georgia. The city is dotted with large mansions, giving it the nickname “the rich man’s city,” and the local leaders continue to have a strong record of historic preservation. Many historic buildings, parks and other historical significances are quite well preserved.
