Carrboro is a town (not a city) located in Orange County, in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is currently home to a population of over 19,500 residents and is a part of the Raleigh-Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area, the second-largest metropolitan area in the state. Founded in 1882, Carrboro was originally a mill town more than anything, but with growth of the Raleigh area during the 20th century, Carrboro grew as well. It was incorporated as a town in 1911. It was the home of a mill-turned-munitions factory during World War II, which helped spark job growth in the area. Today, Carrboro is perhaps best known for being located right next to Chapel Hill, which is a prominent city and the home of University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
