Founded as a military fort in the area, Belmont became a refuge for new residents to North Carolina during the 18th and early 19th centuries, and new residents brought new things such as textiles and grain mills, which helped bring new economic opportunities to the Belmont area. The name was originally Garibaldi Station, and the reason for the city’s name change is not known, though it was officially incorporated as “Belmont” in 1895.
