Moving all of your possessions out of your current home and into a new one is challenging and stressful enough – but put your delivery location a thousand miles away in a completely different state and region of the country and the stress factor multiplies.
There’s a really great way to make things a bit easier on yourself, though – have a garage sale! Seriously, it’s one of the best things that you can do when you’re looking to start moving, and there’s a few different reasons why.
For starters, it gets rid of a lot of stuff you don’t need. When you’re moving and you’re hiring a moving company to haul your stuff for you, the weight of all your items is going to be incredibly influential on your price, and the more your stuff weighs the more expensive it’s going to be.
Going through your items and finding things that you can get rid of will help you tremendously when it comes to saving money – who knows, you could drop 500 pounds of items over the course of a weekend, netting you savings in the hundreds of dollars while also giving you some cash in your pocket.
If you have a family, have your wife (or husband) and your kids (if you have any) gather up things that they don’t need or don’t want, and then make sure that you advertise the crap out of your garage sale.
Once you start running it, sell everything you can. The more you sell, the less you have to ship, which is going to save you money and also time since your movers don’t have to load as much into their truck. Did we mention the money?
Yeah, garage sales are great because they net you money, especially if you’re selling stuff that a lot of people want. Things like books and old movies that you don’t read or watch usually go like hotcakes.
Missing a piece out of Monopoly or just never play it? Sell it, get $5 for it and, if you want to, buy it later. Clothes are also a great thing to sell, especially if you like keeping up with fashion and you have a lot of things from seasons that are now out of fashion. The higher quality stuff you have, the more you can get for it, and you can use those funds to help pay for your shipment as well.
