Hurricane Florence Could be “Storm of a Lifetime”

Hurricane Florence

Though Hurricane Florence is only a category 2 hurricane, it’s going to be a nasty one.

The hurricane’s outer bands have already reached the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The rest of Florence will be following tonight. Wind gusts in the 70’s have been reported, with “catastrophic flash flooding” expected. Naturally, car shipping to and from the region will be affected.

How Hurricane Florence is Impacting the Region

Right now, most of the rain and wind is still in eastern North Carolina. But this will undoubtedly change as the storm pushes further west and north over the weekend.

Wilington and Hatteras – the first of which is a prime car transport hub – are already being hit by Florence’s outer bands. Also, waves of over 80 feet on the ocean have been reported. In other words, despite “just” being a Category 2 hurricane, Florence is expected to cause some serious damage.

The Weather Service is predicting severe flash flooding, hurricane force winds, and storm surges that likely will last through the weekend. Remnants of Florence will likely linger into next week.

The Carolinas are in for a serious thumping from Hurricane Florence. Citizens have been urged to evacuate the area, with the governor saying those that say do so at their own peril.

How Hurricane Florence will Impact Auto Transport Services

Naturally, carriers aren’t going to drive through a damn hurricane. That’s pretty much par for the course. So eastern North and South Carolina aren’t going to be accessible over the weekend. Considering the time of year, this definitely puts a kink in a lot of shippers’ routes and plans.

Many of them traveling through the eastern Carolinas, Georgia, and Virginia, will either wait until the storm passes or move west. I-95 will likely see little traffic through the Carolinas as it sits right in the way of the hurricane.

If you’re shipping to or from the area, expect delays or cancellations. We try hard to not cancel any orders, but some customers don’t want to take the chance. Some have already decided to cancel orders anyway, using their vehicles to drive away from the storm instead.

Once Florence passes and the damage assessed, we’ll see the auto shipping industry back on the road again. But it’ll likely take some time. While we don’t know how extensive the damage from Hurricane Florence will be, we know that there will be plenty. We’ll keep you appraised as the situation progresses.
