McAllen is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas, and according to the official US Census estimate taken in 2008 the population of the city was over 106,000, though more recent estimates taken in 2012 put the population of McAllen at over 129,800.

It is the principal city of the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of over 710,000 in 2008 and 804,000 in 2012.

McAllen is currently one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, and is a principle city in the Reynosa-McAllen Metropolitan Area, a wider area than the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission metro area that is home to over 1.5 million residents.

The city of McAllen was founded and built on agriculture and oil, though today it is the location of a major “Foreign Trade Zone.” This zone is an area in the city where businesses can take advantage of the system and manufacture their products using cheap labor, though in recent years the city has shied away from the zone and instead has focused on building its core economy with new businesses and more residents.

This shift away from the foreign trade zone has resulted in an economic boom in McAllen; this has been aided by new industries coming to the area, bringing high-paying manufacturing jobs to the region and promoting city and county growth.

During the summer months, average daily highs in McAllen usually reach into the mid-to-upper 90’s during the day, with overnight lows usually falling down into the low-to-mid 70’s. Temperatures drop during the winter, and somewhat drastically; average highs in the winter months usually only reach into the mid 50’s during the day, with overnight lows falling down into the low-to-mid 30’s. Snowfall is generally uncommon in the area, though daily highs in the summer have been known to break triple digits.
