Harlingen is a city in Cameron County, Texas. Home to over 64,800 residents and it is actually the second largest city in the county and the third largest in the Rio Grande Valley after Brownsville and McAllen. Harlingen currently sits as a principal city of the Brownsville-Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a member of the larger Brownsville-Harlingen-Raymondville Combined Statistical Area. The Brownsville-Harlingen Metropolitan Area is currently home to just over 500,000 residents.
Harlingen was founded as a shipping and industrial center in the early 1900’s, and by 1920 the city had grown to over 1,000 residents. Located at a strategic overland intersection – that of U.S. Route 77 and U.S. Route 83 – Harlingen became a fairly popular warehousing area during the first half of the 20th century, when its economy was mainly based on agriculture.
After the outbreak of World War II, Harlingen became a major military supplier and today the Air Force still uses many buildings and airfields that were constructed during the war for their own day-to-day needs. Harlingen’s economy today is based much more on services than industry, though manufacturing and even agriculture are still present.
During the summer months the city’s temperatures tend to reach into the mid 90’s during the day, while overnight lows tend to drop down into the low 70’s. During the winter months, however, temperatures tend to peak in the high 60’s during the day, with overnight lows often dropping into the low 40’s. Snow, like with most cities in Texas, is relatively uncommon Harlingen, and even more so than other areas due to its higher temperatures.
