El Paso is a city in as well as the county seat of El Paso County, Texas. Currently home to a population of over 674,000, El Paso ranks as the sixth-largest city in the state of Texas and the 19th largest city in the United States.

El Paso also anchors its metropolitan area, aptly named the El Paso Metropolitan Area, that currently has a population of over 831,000, and the city is the 22nd largest in the United States. El Paso, like many cities in the state of Texas, has seen a lot of population growth in a relatively short amount of time. El Paso is one of the most well-known border cities in the entire American Southwest.

It was originally founded as a Spanish mission during the late 17th century – the official date given for El Paso’s founding is 1680. After its construction and opening, a small town grew around the mission, namely to help supply the dwellers with food and water. This in turn helped the area to attract more settlers, and by the early 1820’s the area was keen to help in the Texan Revolution, which was the driving force in the break from Mexico, and El Paso continued to expand as the years went by.

It was officially incorporated by the US State of Texas in 1879. After the Second World War the city served as a major secret operations facility for the US Army (working out of Fort Bliss), and today the city has grown by leaps and bounds to become the sixth largest city in the state.

El Paso is located in far west Texas, near the uppermost corner in the panhandle region. This means that El Paso sits firmly in the Texan desert, and daily highs in the summer can easily reach triple digits. Average highs during the day tend to be in the mid-to-upper 90’s, while overnight lows often drop down into the low 70’s.

During the winter months temperatures are cooler, with average highs in the upper 50’s and lower 60’s with overnight lows often down around freezing. Snow is quite uncommon, though not unheard of, especially in the higher elevations around the El Paso metro area.
