Florida lies on a large peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean and the Straits of Florida. It actually extends all the way north to a panhandle, which lies along the Gulf of Mexico exclusively. It’s bordered on the north by Alabama and Georgia, and on the west, at the end of the panhandle by Alabama. What’s interesting is because of its location, it was considered a prime attack target during the second world war and as such many air defense bases were built all around the state. It’s also one of the largest states east of the Mississippi and is third in total water area, behind Alaska and Michigan. This makes it ideal if you’re looking for auto transport there.
Britton Hill is actually the highest point in all of Florida, standing at only 345 feet above sea level. It’s also the lowest highpoint of all the states in the union, and despite popular belief Florida is not all “flat.” It actually features many vistas that go up to over 100 feet in places, and also is the home of the Florida Everglades, the largest swamp system in the United States.
What makes Florida so appealing is its wonderful weather. It lies right on the water, thus cooling it down somewhat, and Florida is classified as having a humid subtropical climate, except for the region south of Lake Okeechobee. This region has a full-blown tropical climate. What makes this so dangerous, however, is that the Gulf of Mexico pushes warm fronts in from the west while the Atlantic pushes cold fronts in from the east. These collide, resulting in sometimes massive hurricanes that can devastate the state. Hurricanes Ivan, Katrina and Dennis have all passed over Florida (along with many others), but these are generally not as big as they can be. The hurricanes pick up speed over the mainland, thus missing Florida.
However, one of the downsides to living in Florida is that its educational system has been ranked in the bottom 25 percent of many national surveys, and former governor Jeb Bush (brother of the President) has been repeatedly criticized for supporting a system that perpetually under funds schools, making them less of a place of education.
