Atlantic Beach is a city located in Duval County, Florida, and currently is home to over 12,600 residents. Located in the Jacksonville Metropolitan Area, Atlantic Beach is actually only quasi-independent; despite the fact that it maintains its own municipal government, residents vote in the general Jacksonville elections and they also have representation in Jacksonville’s local government. Atlantic Beach is located about 20 miles east of Jacksonville, on the coast of Florida and is a popular resort town in the region. Atlantic Beach’s history stretches back to 1900, when Henry Flagler built a railroad spur to the coast out of Jacksonville and decided to open a hotel. People began to flock to the area, and the town of Atlantic Beach was incorporated in 1926. It has remained relatively small, serving more as a resort and getaway town than anything else, and today is a less-popular snowbird destination in the state of Florida.
