Watertown is a city in and the county seat of Jefferson County, New York, and according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 26,000. Fort Drum, a US Army post, is located just outside the city.
It was named after the many falls that are located on the nearby Black River and was founded in the early 19th century as a major center for manufacturing in the region. In the early 20th century it had more millionaires per capita than any other city in the nation. It became the county seat of Jefferson County in 1805 and has held the position since.
