Schenectady is a city in and the county seat of Schenectady County, New York, and according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the city’s population was over 61,000, which makes it the ninth largest city in the state. The name comes from a Mohawk word for “near the pines,” and it currently resides just 18 miles northwest as Albany, the state capital.

Schenectady was founded in 1661 and was originally colonized by the Dutch. The city was incorporated as a borough in 17655 and then in 1798 was reincorporated as a city. It became the headquarters for the General Electric Company in 1892 and has been known as “The City That Lights the World,” in reference to GE.
