The name was changed to Kalamazoo in 1836, and was incorporated as a city in 1883. The city didn\’t see much action during the first half of the 20th century, and was the site of forced integration of schools in the early 1970\’s, prompting several prominent families to move to adjacent districts.

The city lies in a continental climate, which is influenced heavily by the Great Lakes. Summers are typically warm, with temperatures rarely getting above 85 degrees, while lows typically don’t fall below 60. However, during the winter, temperatures are extremely cold, with average highs just above freezing, and lows dipping down to around 20. Snowfall is common in the city during the winter months.
