Flint is a city in Michigan, 66 miles northwest of Detroit. As of 2000, the city had roughly 125,000 people, making it the fifth largest city in the state, and is also the county seat of Genesse County, which constitutes the entire Flint Metropolitan Area – the fourth largest metropolitan area in the state of Michigan. Flint Charter Township, a city adjacent to Flint on the west, is actually politically independent from the main city of Flint.
Many scholars actually consider the area where Flint is located to be the oldest continually inhabited area in Michigan, but it wasn’t settled officially until 1819, when a fur trading post was established.
The city became a lumber center during the latter half of the 19th century, until automobiles edged out lumber companies around the turn of the century, and for a time all Buick and Chevy vehicles were built in the city.
Since the late 1960’s, Flint has experienced economic downturn at every level going into the 21st century, with depopulation, deindustrialization and disinvestment being the primary factors contributing to the decline. However, recent urban renewal projects have recently been enacted, and Flint is slowly turning around.
The city lies in a continental climate, which is influenced heavily by the Great Lakes. Summers are typically warm, with temperatures rarely getting above 85 degrees, while lows typically don’t fall below 60. However, during the winter, temperatures are extremely cold, with average highs just above freezing, and lows dipping down to around 20. Snowfall is common in the city during the winter months.
