Lansing is the capital city of the state of Michigan, but oddly enough it is the only US capital to not be a county seat (of the states that use the county system). It is, however, the state’s 5th largest city, with a total population (in the city proper) of almost 115,000, and a combined statistical area (which includes Shiawassee County) has a total population of just over 528,000.

Lansing was originally founded because of a scam. Two brothers plotted what would be Lansing, named it “Biddle City,” and snookered a group of 16 men to buy plots in the fake city. Upon arriving, the men were too stubborn to leave, and instead founded Lansing, after their hometown of Lansing, NY.

The state constitution of Michigan required that the capital be moved from Detroit to another city, and Lansing was chosen. At the turn of the 20th century, Olds Motor Company moved their headquarters to the city, and the city became an industrial powerhouse, a title it holds to this day.

The city lies in a continental climate, which is influenced heavily by the Great Lakes. Summers are typically warm, with temperatures rarely getting above 85 degrees, while lows typically don’t fall below 60. However, during the winter, temperatures are extremely cold, with average highs just above freezing, and lows dipping down to around 20. Snowfall is common in the city during the winter months.
