Detroit is the largest city and the county seat of Wayne County. It is a major port city in the Midwestern region of the United States and is known as the nation’s traditional automotive center, as well as an important source of popular music, with Motown and The Motor City being popular cities. As of the 2007 census, Detroit ranked as the 11th most populous city in the United States with just under 1 million residents; during the 1950’s, however, the city was one of the largest cities in the nation, but urban decay and the movement from the city to the suburbs has resulted in population decline.

The city was named after the Detroit River, which links Lake Huron and Lake Erie; from 1805 to 1847, the city was actually the capital of Michigan, and during the war of 1812 fell into British hands and was recaptured by the US, then incorporated as a city in 1915. It was a major port for smugglers during the Great Depression, with the Detroit River being a popular route to get past law enforcement. During the 1920’s and 30’s, industry in the city boomed, and the city as a whole swelled to 1.8 million members in the 1950’s. During WWII, the city was known as “The Arsenal of Democracy.” However, crime riddled the city in the 1970’s and 80’s, and it wasn’t until the late 1990’s that Detroit started seeing any real growth. Now, however, the city is in the midst of a major urban renewal, and businesses that fled the city during the massive crime wave are slowly making their way back.

The city lies in a continental climate, which is influenced heavily by the Great Lakes. Summers are typically warm, with temperatures rarely getting above 85 degrees, while lows typically don’t fall below 60. However, during the winter, temperatures are extremely cold, with average highs just above freezing, and lows dipping down to around 20. Snowfall is common in the city during the winter months.
