Hammond is the largest city in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, and as of 2006 its population was 17,639. Although the largest city in the parish, it is not the parish seat. However, it is the principal of the Tangipahoa Parish Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Tangipahoa Parish as well as Hammond and the surrounding towns.

The area was first settled in 1818 by a Swedish settler, and in the 1850\’s the first railroad came to the city, thus starting its burgeoning growth into a commercial transport center that continues today. Factories began to spring up after the Civil War, and its proximity to both New Orleans and Baton Rouge has allowed the city to continue to grow and is quickly becoming a suburb to both cities.

The climate is humid subtropical, which means that summers are typically hot and humid, and unlike most Midwest cities, summers are mild with the occasional cold snap during late December or early January. Average highs during summer hover around the upper 90\’s, while the lows drop around 65. During the winter, temperatures get up to about 65, while lows drop in the low 50\’s to high 40\’s.
