Odessa is a city in as well as the county seat of Ector County, Texas; according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 90,000, though the most recent Census, conducted in 2010, put the city’s population at over 99,900. It is the principal city of the Odessa Metropolitan Statistical Area, and it is a member of the Midland-Odessa Combined Statistical Area, which had a population of over 266,000.
The city was founded in 1881 as nothing more than a small stop along the Texas and Pacific Railway. Named the county seat in 1891, Odessa grew slowly but steadily, and today the city is perhaps best-known for its great performing arts sector, which is supported by a rather large and robust tourism industry in the city. Tourism is one of the major contributors to Odessa’s overall economic health, and it is a large part of the city’s annual income. High school football is a major draw as well, mainly because of the lack of professional sports teams in the city.
Average daily highs in Odessa only reach into the low 90’s during the day, while overnight lows can drop down anywhere within the high 60’s and low 70’s. Winter months tend to bring cooler temperatures, but rarely does it snow in Odessa thanks to its location. Average winter highs usually only peak in the mid 50’s, and overnight lows can fall down to around the freezing mark, though snow is uncommon which helps auto transportation to and from the city during the winter months.
