Springfield is the state capital of the state of Illinois and is also the county seat of Sangamon County, with a population of 116,000 as of the 2006 census. It is part of the greater Springfield Greater Metropolitan Area, which includes all of Sangamon County and parts of neighboring Maynard County, and its total population is just over 205,000, making it one of the largest in the state of Illinois.
It was originally settled as Calhoun, Illinois, after Senator John C. Calhoun of South Carolina, and was originally settled by trappers and traders in 1818, where a small trading post was established. Like most other trading posts, it grew and became a large agricultural center of the state.
When it was named to the county seat, the name Calhoun fell out of favor with the people (mainly due to the fact that the Senator himself fell out of favor with the people), and the town was renamed Springfield. Abraham Lincoln was born and raised in Springfield, running for public office often before running for the presidency. Today the city is still considered to be a small town, despite the number of people and the importance it plays in state politics.
Like most cities in Illinois, Springfield has four distinct seasons, with summer high temperatures hovering around 85 degrees, and lows hitting around 58 or so. During the winter, snowfall is fairly common, and high temperatures rarely get above 40 degrees, with low temperatures below freezing much of the time.
