Peoria is a city in as well as the county seat of Peoria County, Illinois. Home to a population of over 115,000, Peoria is the largest city situated on the Illinois River, and is currently the seventh-largest city in the state in terms of total population. The city has become famous for being the “average American city”, and many companies use Peoria residents as a test market for new products. The phrase “Will it work in Peoria?” has become synonymous with the idea that if something will sell in Peoria, it will sell anywhere.
The city is one of the oldest settled areas in Illinois, much older than Chicago, and was originally founded by French trappers in 1680 that were looking for a new area to trap and sell furs. It’s founding date makes it the oldest European-colonized city in the state. A trading post was setup, though it was abandoned by the 19th century; when Americans began expanding west, the remains of the post were transformed into Fort Clark. In 1825, when the county of Peoria was organized, the fort having become a small settlement, and the area was renamed Peoria and named as the county seat.
Peoria, like most cities in the region, sits in a humid tropical climate. This tends to result in hot summers and cold winters. Temperatures in the summer typically reach into the low-to-mid 80’s, while overnight summer lows usually only drop into the upper 50’s and lower 60’s.
During the winter, however, snowfall is common and winter highs rarely peak above 40 degrees, with average lows well below freezing – this can cause problems from an auto transport perspective, as carriers don’t really like to run routes through snowy areas. Prices tend to be higher in the winter than the summer and delays are more common thanks to the snow and ice.
