Champaign is a city in Champaign County, Illinois, and is also the county seat. The city is located 135 miles west of Indianapolis, Indiana, and is considered part of Silicon Prairie, mainly due to the high number of high tech jobs in the area. This is in no small part thanks to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, in junction with its sister city of Urbana. The city proper has a population of just over 75,000 residents.

The city was founded in 1855 when the Illinois Central Railroad laid rail tracks two miles west of downtown Urbana and the city sprang up like a weed. It was originally called West Urbana, but after a city charter was granted in 1860 the city changed its name to Champaign and it never looked back. The city has seen widespread growth during the 20th century and into the 21st, and likely will continue to grow.

The city is known for its many historical landmarks, including the Champaign City Building, which serves as City Hall and was once the headquarters for both the police department and the fire department, before finally settling in as the office for the city proper.
