Ogden was the first permanent settlement founded by Americans (of European descent) in the state of Utah, and originally it was a small fort designed to keep Native Americans away from the settlement. The fort was purchased by Mormon pioneers a year later, which converted it into Brownsville and settled there as well. The name was changed to Ogden sometime later and was named for Henry Ogden who had trapped and settled the region several years prior.
