Orem is a city in Utah County, in the U.S. state of Utah. Located just north of Provo, the third-largest city in the state, Orem ranks fifth in Utah in total population, as it is home to over 84,300 total residents. Orem is a principal city of the Provo-Orem Metropolitan Statistical Area, a metro area just south of Salt Lake City along Interstate 15 that is home to over 555,000 total residents. Orem has recently been rated as one of the top 5 places to raise a family by Forbes Magazine and is currently one of the fastest-growing areas in the state of Utah.
Orem was founded, like many cities in Utah, by Mormon pioneers. Orem was founded later than Provo, closer to the turn of the 20th century, though Utah had been settled since at least the early 1840’s. The name Orem was finalized in 1914 and the city was officially incorporated in 1919. After its incorporation many people moved to Orem from other areas of Utah, and today it is the home of Utah Valley University, a major center of higher education in the Provo-Orem Area as well as numerous smaller businesses. Orem, like Provo, is rapidly growing, with its population expected to grow over the next decade.
Like Provo, Orem sees generally hot and humid summers thanks to its proximity to Utah Lake, with average highs reaching into the low-to-mid 90’s and overnight lows often dropping down into the low-to-mid 60’s.
