Provo is a city in as well as the county seat of Utah County, in the U.S. state of Utah. Home to over 112,400 residents in the city proper, Provo is the third-largest city in the state of Utah, and also anchors a metropolitan area home to over 526,800 residents, a fairly large metro area considering Provo’s location. Provo is the home of Brigham Young University and is also the site of the largest Missionary Training Center for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, also known as the Mormon Church. Like most cities in Utah, Provo has a high Mormon population in comparison to other cities of its size across the United States.
Provo was first explored by the Spanish as early as 1776, but it was not until Mormon pioneers founded Fort Utah in 1849. Provo, like many cities in Utah, was founded as a Mormon town after their exile from the U.S. in the late 1840’s. 33 Mormon families settled at the fort, which was renamed in 1850 after a French explorer and incorporated not long after. Over time Provo became a regional manufacturing and distribution center, and after the construction of Brigham Young University Provo became a major center for education as well. Today its economy is much more diverse than in years past, and it is a thriving city as of today.
