The city was first founded as a trading post in 1860 which, oddly enough, was named Hellgate Village before being renamed Missoula Falls several years later. The trading post was followed by a sawmill and a flourmill, and the population continued to grow. The University of Montana was founded in 1895, adding to the population boom. Logging was (and still is) a huge industry in the city, giving many people jobs and creating a huge population boom that continues to this day.
The temperatures in the city, during the summer months, typically hover around 80 degrees or so during the day, and drop down to around 25 degrees at night. During the winter months, however, the temperature rarely exceeds 20 degrees, and during the night temperatures often go below 0 degrees. This is mainly due to the fact that the city lies in a very arid, yet cold, region.
