Helena is a city in as well as the state capital of the U.S. state of Montana; it is also the county seat of Lewis and Clark County. The city is currently home to over 29,500 residents, a growth of over 1,400 residents in just a few years. Helena serves as the principal city of the Helena Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is home to over 76,800 and includes all of both Lewis and Clark County and Jefferson County.

The city was founded in 1864, though people had been trading in the area for years beforehand, and people had come through the area on their way west to California during the California Gold Rush. Helena’s growth was initially attributed to the discovery of gold in the area, and by 1890 Helena was home to more millionaires than anywhere else in the world. This concentration of wealth led to a rise in prestigious homes, many of them built in the Victorian fashion, and of which many still stand and are still occupied today.

During the summer months, average daily highs in Helena tend to reach into the low-to-mid 80’s, while temperatures overnight tend to drop down into the upper 40’s and lower 50’s. During the winter months the temperatures drop sharply, with average highs only reaching into the low-to-mid 30’s during the day and dropping well into the teens overnight. Helena sees, on average, over 35 inches of snow per year, most of it falling between November and April, though snowfall as early as September and as late as May has been recorded.
