Lakewood was founded (and, indeed, incorporated) as Dupontonia, which was named after the DuPont rayon manufacturing facility located near the town. The name changed in 1961 and was reincorporated that same y ear. The City of Nashville and the rest of Davidson County merged, which was when Lakewood decided that it would remain an autonomous city – because of this, it operates its own police force and city council separate from that of the county.

During the summer months the city’s temperatures hit around 86 degrees during the day with lows often dropping to around 64 degrees overnight. During the winter months, temperatures drop severely, with highs often topping out around 37 degrees and lows typically dropping to around 28 degrees overnight.
