Hoover is a city in both Jefferson and Shelby County, Alabama, and is actually the largest suburb of Birmingham, the state capital. According to the 2000 US Census the city’s population was over 62,000, though recent estimates project the population to be over 73,000. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Birmingham-Hoover-Cullman Combined Statistical Area, and today is a major shopping area, with one of the largest shopping centers in the entire southeastern United States located within the city’s limits.
Hoover was incorporated in 1967 and, contrary to popular belief was not named after President Herbert Hoover, but rather William Hoover, an insurance company owner who had a large influence on the initial growth and development of the fledgling town. It has been known as Hoover since the early 1930’s, though growth was slow even after it was incorporated. However, during construction of the Interstate Highway System, I-459 and I-65 were constructed through the city, which brought a large influx of new residents, which in turn led to a huge explosion in the population of the town.
During the summer months the city’s temperatures hit around 85 degrees during the day, with lows often dropping to around 50 degrees overnight. During the winter, however, temperatures cool down slightly, with highs typically topping out around 57 degrees during the day and lows dropping to around 42 degrees overnight.
