Fort Wayne is a city in Indiana, and with a total population of 251,000 is the second largest city in the state after Indianapolis, and the combined population of the Fort Wayne Metropolitan Statistical Area (570,000) makes it the third largest population area in the state. The city was founded around Fort Wayne actual, a fort that was built not long after the Revolutionary War ended.
After continuous struggle with the Native Americans over the territory where Fort Wayne currently lies, President George Washington ordered the United States Army to secure Indiana. In a surprising turn of events, the Native Americans laid to waste the US forces in a series of battles, and Anthony Wayne, an officer in the US Army, led an expedition to the Native American’s village while the warriors were away, which forced the Natives to negotiate for peace.
Once peace was established, forts were built in the area to protect settlers, and the city was built not long after the fort was established. The construction of the Erie Canal helped boost Fort Wayne, allowing more trade to come in and out of the city and making it an important city in the state.
Fort Wayne, like most other cities in the region, has a humid continental climate, which means that the city experiences four distinct seasons. During the summer months, the temperatures rarely go above 95 degrees, while rarely dropping below 63. During the winter, however, average temperatures typically hover around 34 degrees, while overnight lows drop below freezing, and snowfall is fairly common.
