Charlottesville is a city in and the county seat of Albemarle County, Virginia, and according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 49,000. It is an independent city and, thus, is politically independent from Albemarle County and in 2004 it was named as the best place in the United States to live.

It was founded in 1762 by the Virginia House of Burgesses and remained relatively untouched during the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the American Civil War, despite heavy involvement in all three. It was actually one of the few cities in the South to emancipate slaves before the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and granted more rights than almost any other southern city to freed slaves after the War ended.

During the summer months temperatures in the city typically hit around 87 degrees during the day, with lows typically dropping down to around 70 degrees or so overnight. During the winter months however temperatures typically hit around 55 degrees during the day with lows often dropping down to around 34 degrees overnight.
