Honolulu is the largest city in and capital of the U.S. state of Hawaii, and is the county seat of the City and County of Honolulu. Honolulu, for statistical purposes, is considered a census county division (CCD), with a population of over 390,000 in the CCD and 953,000 in the county.

Honolulu is a major tourist destination as well as a major financial center in the Pacific Ocean, and is both the westernmost and southernmost city in the United States. Honolulu is also a major hub for international business and is famous for its cultural diversity, as it acts as almost a gateway to the Pacific Ocean.

Honolulu is located on the island of Oahu, though many mistakenly believe it to be on “The Big Island;” as an archipelago, the state of Hawaii is spread over a number of islands, though only eight of them are considered “large.” Honolulu is located in the middle of the island chain, on Oahu, as opposed to the island of Hawaii, which is the largest island in the chain.

Honolulu was first inhabited by Polynesian migrants sometime before the 11th century. It was first discovered by Europeans in 1794; Captain William Brown of Great Britain erroneously sailed into Honolulu Harbor, where he found the king of the Hawaiian peoples, Kamehameha, ruling over a thriving civilization.

His discovery brought more foreign traffic, and the king’s descendants, Kamehameha II and III, went about revitalizing Honolulu, turning it into a more modern capital. The island chain would be annexed by the United States in 1898.

Honolulu has withstood a number of crises and problems, including the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Great Honolulu Chinatown Fire of 1900, and more. Today it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

Hawaii has a tropical climate and sees relatively little deviation in terms of temperature. During the summer months, average highs reach into the mid-to-upper 80’s, with overnight lows falling into the low-to-mid 70’s.

During the winter months, average highs reach into the high 70’s or low 80’s with overnight lows often in the mid-60’s. Its record high in the summer is 94, while its record high in winter is 88 degrees; the summer record low is just 63 degrees, while the record low for winter is 52 degrees.

In other words, Honolulu – and much of Hawaii in general – is an absolutely beautiful place to visit and live, and if you get the chance to go there you definitely should take it.
