It was first built as a trading post, though it was incorporated as a village in 1853. The area grew rapidly as more people discovered the settlement and in the 1860’s Lawrence University was built in the city. It was originally driven by the paper industry, though today the economy is much more service-based than before. Appleton is also the birthplace of Harry Houdini.
