The Ford Ranger is Ford’s least expensive truck series, and as of 2012 has been in production for 29 years. It was introduced in 1983 and currently the Ranger has three distinct models in the lineup. The most basic Ranger, the Ford Ranger XL, has an MSRP of $18,160, features a 2.3L DOHC Straight-4 engine capable of 143 hp and 154 ft-lbs of torque. The second in the lineup, the XLT, features two different engines: a 2.3L DOHC Straight-4 and a 4.0L SOHC V6, a more powerful option featuring more horsepower and more torque for the same mileage (the XL and XLT have 22/27 mpg [city/highway], high numbers for pickup trucks; the Sport, the most expensive Ranger option, gets 16/21 mpg). The Sport features a 4.0L SOHC V6 engine, which has the most torque and horsepower but also the worst gas mileage.
The Ranger is designed to be a lightweight pickup truck capable of handling anywhere from 1,340 lbs to 5,960 lbs of towing and provide maximum mileage for drivers on a budget as well as maximum efficiency. The Ford Ranger series is also meant to be driven daily, hence the good gas mileage for a pickup truck.
