Prosser is a city in Benton County, in the U.S. state of Washington. It is also the county seat, despite being home to just over 5,800 residents (it is far from the largest city in Benton County). Founded in 1885, Prosser grew mostly because of its proximity to the railroads, which helped bring in new residents and materials to help the fledgling town grow, though only so much. As the nearby cities of Richland and Kennewick and Pasco saw growth throughout the 20th century, Prosser was slower by comparison, perhaps because of its heavy ties to agriculture. Today, though, Prosser is known for its small town feel and atmosphere, as well as being the home of an agricultural adjunct of Washington State University, which teaches kids about agriculture and also provides areas for research.
