Monessen is a city located in Westmoreland County, in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. Currently home to a population of over 7,700, it is a part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area, the second-largest in the state, and sits maybe 20 miles or so south of Pittsburgh proper. Like many cities in the area, Monessen was a major steel producer during the 1940’s and 50’s and at its peak boasted a population of over 20,000. However, the decline of the steel industry led to an economic depression and a loss of population.
