Home to a population of over 11,700 total residents, Lower Burrell is a part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area, and sits about 18 miles northeast of Pittsburgh proper. The city was first founded in 1852 and was incorporated as a city in 1859. Originally just known as Burrell, the city was split into Upper Burrell and Lower Burrell in 1879 and Lower Burrell began to see slow but steady growth in the years that followed. The city became a small commercial and residential center, though its economy began to decline during the 1970’s and 80’s. Today, it is slowly starting to improve.
