It is currently home to a population of about 47,000 residents, give or take a few, and is located in the New York City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is anchored by New York City, to the east. West Orange was originally a part of nearby Newark, though it was separated in the early 19th century and was incorporated as a township in 1863. Reincorporated as a town in 1900, it was reincorporated as a township in 1980 to take advantage of Federal revenue sharing policies, the same reason why many cities and towns in Essex County and other counties in New Jersey are townships, though they have the same basic responsibilities as any other city or town in any other state.
