The city was originally known as Prairie Rapids Crossing, and was first settled in 1845 by one couple, and more followed in the following months. The name was changed shortly after the first post office was erected, and why it was still remains a mystery. Some say that the federal government wanted something a little shorter, but that\’s just rumor. The city is rooted in agriculture, and during the 1980\’s was hit hard by many agricultural companies going out of business or moving, and the city really hasn\’t recovered since.
The city is like most other cities in Iowa, with hot summers and cold winters. Average temperatures in the summer range from a high of around 82 degrees to a low of about 65, while in the winter the average high barely hits 40 degrees and the low stays around 20 degrees. Snow is common in the winter months, and in the summer heat waves are common.
