Cedar Rapids is the second largest city in Iowa and is the county seat of Linn County. The city lies on the banks of the Cedar River (hence its name), and is a flourishing center for arts and entertainment in the state. Its population was just over 126,000 in 2007, and those numbers are expected to grow in later years, as the city become more popular and urban renewal takes effect.
The city was founded in 1838 by Osgood Shepherd, and was named for several different things: one being that the city was founded by the Cedar River rapids, and the Cedar River was named for the bank of red cedar trees that were growing next to the site that Osgood Shepherd picked.
It was originally named Columbus by Shepherd, but was renamed when the town was incorporated in 1849. During 2008, over 300 families were displaced when the banks of the Cedar River rose to 31.2 ft (a record-setting depth) and flooded the city.
The city is home to many high tech and big businesses, mainly because it is part of the Technology Corridor, a region of the state which also includes Iowa City and its major metropolitan area to the south. Companies like General Mills, Qwest, and Toyota Financial Services, just to name a few.
