Springfield is a city in and the county seat of Clark County, Ohio, and it is the home of Wittenberg University, which is one of the nation’s top liberal arts colleges. According to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the city’s population was over 65,000 and according to a 2007 US Census estimate the population had boomed to over 140,000. It is also a principal city of the Dayton-Springfield-Greenville Combined Statistical Area, which has a population of over 1.6 million residents.

The city was founded in 1801 when Clark County was formed; the city was immediately named as the county seat. It was dominated by industry during most of the 19th century, which helped the city expand rapidly. During the 20th century, however, Springfield experienced urban decay and white flight (much like many other major cities at the time), though today the industrial sector of the city has diversified.
