Spokane is a city in and the county seat of Spokane County, Washington; it is also the largest city in the county. According to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 200,000, which makes it the second largest city in the state, and the greater Spokane Metropolitan Statistical Area had over 456,000 residents.
It was first settled in 1871 and incorporated ten years later. It began life as a trading post for settlers gearing up to cross the rugged Cascade Mountains, and though its purpose has long since ended the city continues to serve as a major cultural center in eastern Washington. It also helps serve the small town of Pullman, which houses the Washington State University campus.
During the summer months temperatures in the city typically hit around 75 degrees during the day, with lows often dropping down to around 55 degrees overnight. During the winter months, however, temperatures typically hit around 45 degrees during the day, with lows dropping to around 27 degrees overnight.
