Bellingham is a city in and the county seat of Whatcom County, Washington – it is currently the 12th largest city in the state, with a population of over 75,000 according to the official US Census conducted in 2000. It is the principal city of the Bellingham Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes most of Whatcom County.
It was founded in 1858 by a local coal mining company who saw the benefits of mining in the area. Thousands of workers were brought to the city and it grew virtually overnight, and after gold was found it grew even faster. The rush didn’t last long, leaving the city as a coal producer for much of the 19th and 20th centuries, until shipping took over as the major income gatherer for the city.
